This is a historical moment. Unfortunately, although the style is very elegant and refined, history has not captured me. It’s interesting to know that while Lord Ruthven does fulfill the traditional model of a vampire, he’s an aristocrat with strange hypnotic and powers of attraction, but he is immune to the sun. Fueled by ghost stories such as the FantasmagorianaWilliam Beckford ‘s Vathek and quantities of laudanumMary Shelley, in collaboration with Percy Bysshe Shelley,  produced what would become Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus.

It’s hard to say much overall about this story. Mary Shelley worked on a tale with her husband that would later evolve into Frankenstein.

He was one of the earliest pupils at recen John William Polidori was an Italian English physician and writer, known for his associations jkhn the Romantic movement and credited by some as the creator of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction. Polidori transformed the vampire from a character in folklore into the form that is recognized today—an aristocratic fiend who preys among high society. Aubrey returns to London and is amazed when Ruthven appears shortly thereafter, alive and well. Although originally and erroneously accredited to Lord Byronboth Byron and Polidori affirmed that the story is Polidori’s. He had three brothers and four sisters. He was smart as can be, young, young, and very handsome.

We really need you!!! I have little doubt that Lord Ruthven was inspired by Lord Byron. Amazing that such a short story 20 pages in the book I read can be so influential. Since the first time I read Dracula, I have heard of this short gothic story as the first example of the modern figure of the vampire. Just a moment while we sign johj in to your Goodreads account.
Note, April 13, It’s a chilling story with one of the most memorable fictional vampires in literature, and if Polidori had been a slightly better writer, it would still be remembered as fondly as Dracula.
