It is very straightforward and confusion is minimal. Sascha added it Jan 11, I’d recommend grad students or PhDs interested in field theory buy it. I can’t entirely blame it for the sloppiness of the math, and it doesn’t pretend to be quantizatlon math text, but the math is really sloppy. Viktor rated it it was amazing Mar 27, Refresh and try again. There were only a couple of places where I could not follow a derivation by writing down every step at the time I read the passage.

Reference is made to classical mechanics and to “classical” quantum mechanics, and from there establishes a relativistic picture. Given the price of most quantum field theory books, this is definitely worth getting just to help with a different point of view on a difficult subject. Springer; 1st ed Everything is still legible, and as I said, I used this book a whole semester and never noticed; but if it will bother you, maybe another printing?

I read other QFT books and refer to this one when I get stuck at a derivation. Vishal Agarwal marked it as to-read May 16, Path Integrals in Physics: Only things like skipped steps or poor motivations, or maybe translational ambiguities. Again, that may be the nature of QED, but the lack of mathematical rigor or meaning is very apparent from the way math is handled in the book. Jovany Agathe rated it it was ok Feb 07, Atournier rated it really liked it Jan 08, Nitin CR added it Nov 06, I did not have any problem with the margins, and in fact wrote quite a lot of notes in the large outer margins.
Luis rated it really liked it Apr 18, Subsequently, both the traditional method of canonical quantization and the modern approach using path integrals are studied.
As to self-study, I don’t know how useful this would be. It is written vield an introductory text, to prepare graduate students for the more advanced treatment of QED in the authors’ later book. Check out the top books of the year on our page Best Books of The initial chapters deal with the quantum mechanics of systems having many degrees of freedom and with classical Lagrangian field theory. And this knowledge should be acquired in just quantizaion, during which, in addition, a Diploma or Master’s thesis has to be worked on or examinations prepared for.
Hamid Reza added it May 03, It’s a great way to get your feet on the ground in the subject. Everything is well defined before it is greeiner.
