Apparently this is an edited version by August Derleth so I can only imagine what a vast confusing mass the original text must have been. I was never worried about our main narrator because there is a lot of foreshadowing that reveals he lived to tell this story. Is it possible to kill a story with too much world building? Refresh and try again. The audiobook is so relaxing. And it is a curious commentary on the stolidity and imaginative sterility of the human animal that the whispers with which children and strangers were warned away from the mound quickly sank once more into the flat tale of a murderous Indian ghost and his squaw victim.

It just felt like a scholar reading a history book for a couple of hours and honestly, I felt myself to be pretty bored through most of it. Starts out OK, ends poorly. The story concerns an academic who comes to Tumull, Oklahoma to investigate an old mound and the ghosts who haunt it.

Cast out of his old existence, the narrator now tuulo with the “mocking and friendly ghouls on the night wind”, forever and officially an outsider, since the moment he stretched his fingers towards the creature’s paw in the alcove, and felt nothing but the “cold and unyielding surface of polished glass” of a mirror.

I can’t say it’s particularly well written tumuo Lovecraft standards, but the ideas are fantastic; it’d make a really great basis for a screenplay if you take a lot of liberties with the frame story and really explore the internal stuff. Confusing with lots of mentions of strange names with no real explanation tied to it. A creepy little story with some really wild ideas and imagery. Longing for some type of human contact, he climbs through a window into the room. I’ll just say that it was an immensely enjoyable novella.
